The development of science and

Geoinformatics is one of them. This is a branch of science and at the
same time a technology. Geographic information system (GIS) is its object,
subject, and an instrument. GIS is an information system providing for
collection, storage, processing, cartographic presentation, and dissemination
of any spatially related information. Such a system includes five main
components: hardware, software, and data, algorithms for data processing
and analysis, and, naturally, specialists working with GIS.
Over the last three decades GIS has undergone a great change - having
begun as an experimental system for single projects, it turned into a
powerful and rapidly growing information industry with an annual turnover
of billions of dollars. At present it represents a wide range of systems
- from the simplest systems showing a map with a needed house or some
other object on the screen of a pocket computer, up to very powerful systems
that are able to work with millions of objects in distributed databases.
Spatial analysis can find the shortest route between two points and at
the same time help model global processes. The means for data collection
has also changed - now everyone has the possibility to use sattelite navigation
and non-classified space images of the highest resolution.
DATA+, Ltd has worked for ten years in the field of distribution of the
most advanced software for creating GIS in all its diversity. This modern
developing enterprise has grown out of a team of enthusiasts, and this
brochure will tell you about its structure and activities.

Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI), Redlands, California,
U.S.A. It represents the interests ESRI, Inc. in Russia and countries of CIS (except Ukraine where ESRI products are
distributed by Ecomm, Ltd.)

The total sales of GIS software in 2000 reached $939 000 000.

Creation
of Russian (localized) versions of sw
The level of localization of different
sw depends on the marketing value of the product. The main products of
ESRI (ArcView and ArcInfo) are fully localized, including translation
into Russian of the user interface, help files and printed documentation.
Technical
support
DATA+ provides technical support
to the users of the software products by ESRI, including installation
of sw, answers to questions, information about new versions of sw and
new products, supply of sw upgrades, and dissemination of information
and advertising materials.
Consulting
services
The consulting activities of DATA+
help the future users in the wide spectrum of products sold by DATA+,
choose an optimal set of components for solving their tasks, and take
into account possible development of the system in future. These activities
include presentations at forums, conferences, and seminars, organization
of thematic seminars, participation in international projects, and consultation
of individual users.
Project
work
DATA+ takes up different projects
implementing them with the help of ESRI technologies. Such work
can be in the form of an independent project or as part of a larger project
where DATA+ plays the role of a subcontractor.
Publishing
activity
DATA+ has a license for publishing
activities. We publish books on the use of sw from ESRI as well
as training and reference literature on geoinformatics.
We also have our own periodical - ARCREVIEW. It comes out 4 times a year.
This publication is fully devoted to the use of the technologies of geoinformation
systems from ESRI in diverse spheres of public and economic
activity. We began this publication in the middle of 1997, and at present
the number of printed copies reached 10 000. ARCREVIEW is sent out to
the users free. It can also be received in the office of DATA+ or from
our partners. At present there are 3500 subscribers to our newspaper in
many regions of Russia and countries of CIS. You are welcome to join them.
University
support program
For several years now we have
implemented a special program for supporting universities. It was initiated
by ESRI, DATA+, and the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation
represented by the State Research Institute of Information Technologies
and Telecommunications "Informatica". Under this program, only
during the last two years (2000 and 2001) DATA+ helped organize training
classes and provided ESRI software and training materials to over
160 educational institutions of Russia and CIS.
System
integration and co-operation
More and more often geoinformation
systems become an important part of information technologies. That is
why local and international companies - system integrators come to us
because their customers need geoinformation components for their corporate
systems. In this respect DATA+ closely works with such companies as IBS,
PricewaterhouseCoopers, Stins Coman, Microtest, and others.
In a number of cases, DATA+ has to fulfill the role of a system integrator
maintaining close contacts with Moscow offices of IBM, Hewlett-Packard,
Sun Microsystems and others.
As an advisor, DATA+ takes part in a number of geological projects, in
particular, in Sverdlovskaya and Irkutskaya Oblasts, Altaisky and Primorsky
Krays, Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansiysk National Okrugs, and in Bashkortostan.
We have joint projects with many national and overseas organizations and
companies in the framework of international ecological projects implemented
in Russia and nearby countries. Among them: World Bank, US AID, USGS,
TACIS, UNESCO, WARMAP, Aquater, Orascom, Roy International, Comptek International,
AmeriData, GreenPeace Russia as well as a great number of organizations
working in the field of ecology in different departments of our country.
Permanent contacts are also maintained with such professional GIS centers
as GIS Association of Russia, "GISProject", "Geocenter-GIS"
and others.
